We believe in a strong sense of community centered around collaboration, partnership, and achievement. If you share our mission, values, and approach, we’d love to hear from you. The school will consider only top candidates with relevant experience and a proven track record.
Elementary Principal:
An elementary school principal must regularly meet with the school board to make sure school plans are aligned with the mission. As a leader, the principal makes the board aware of the needs of the students and staff at his school and also communicates school information to teachers, students and parents. A principal is also responsible for ensuring that the school operates within the budget provided by CSA board and follows school procedures for school events, hiring teachers and handling student discipline.
Students
A principal must have the respect of the students for a school to run successfully. He or she must be visible, greeting students in the morning, appearing at assemblies and taking time to visit with students. While a principal may have a lot of paperwork and other administrative duties to take care of, he or she must also make time to interact with students and get to know as many of them as possible. This can be done by regularly visiting classrooms, tagging along on select field trips, reading with students in the library or taking time to visit with students at lunch and recess. When disciplinary action is required, the relationship a principal has with students will help make the discipline more effective and more likely to prevent future problems.
Staff
Not only does the principal make decisions about what teachers to hire, but regularly observes and evaluates the teachers working in the school. When teachers are ineffective, the principal must help them to become more effective by providing professional development opportunities or setting up teacher coaching. The principal must also offer regular praise to those teachers who are doing a good job and regularly acknowledge all of the staff who help the school run smoothly. Meeting regularly with grade-level teachers, guidance counselors and school departments helps a principal understand what is going on in the school and keeps everyone on the same page.
Community Relations
As the head of the school, the principal often receives requests to meet with parents and community members. He or she must meet with parents who have concerns about teachers or problem children, but his/her job is also to help get parents involved in their children's educations and encourage them to support the school's vision. By making time to meet with community members, the principal can also secure both financial and general community support for the school. He or she also plays a role in ensuring community members that their tax dollars are being put to good use and the school is offering students a quality education.
Facts
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the median annual pay for K-12 principals is $86,970 and an elementary school principal earns every penny. In fact, the success or failure of a school often lies on the shoulders of its principals. As new schools are built and old principals retire or move on, quality elementary principals are needed to serve as leaders, setting high expectations and bringing together everyone involved in the workings of the school. Expected growth in these is jobs is 10 percent between 2010 and 2020, according to BLS.
